From labour to refreshment the worker, worthy of a wage, moves through the day. No one can work all the time, not even the maker of the universe. It is not that the master of creation cannot toil without ceasing; it is more that work without end is an imbalance and as such it is an imperfection and part of the chaos creation put to flight. Rest and relaxation are as integral to the productivity of people and animals as is their physical labour. Both work and rest play their part in the making of a balanced life. Balance alone can bring quality, not only to our lives and our work, but to the whole world. At the end of each workday the labourer sets down the materials and the tools. God too rests from the labours of his makings; he takes a time, a day, a season, to rest. He who sleeps not nor slumbers, rests. All the din of thought and planning, each scheme and idea, falls silent for a while that the heart and the mind might do other things, for life is more than work. We all find that without the variation and change of rest that the work we do begins to look staid and as tired as we. So like the gods we must take our leisure so that all our efforts are as fruitful and vibrant as the works of heaven. If we dim through overwork we diminish the labour of our creator.
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done.
